Gudbrandsdal Lag

The Gudbrandsdal Lag is an organization of emigrant descendants from the Gudbrandsdal Valley in Norway and those interested in its history and culture. The Gudbrandsdal Lag was formed in 1909 to maintain their ties to the homeland and provide a place for those emigrants to assemble. If you haven't visited their site for awhile it may be worth the visit. There are links by municipality to records such as church, census, land, etc.

Norwegian Farm Names

Those who lived in rural areas of Norway also used a third name to indicate where they lived -- the farm name. When people moved from one farm to another, their last name became the name of the new farm. It wasn't until after 1900 that legislation mandated that people must take permanent family names. Some took the name of the farm while others took the patronymic.

The Norwegian Historical Data Centre (NHDC) is a national institution under the Faculty of Social Science at the University of Tromsø (UiTø). Their main aim is to computerize the Norwegian censuses 1865 onwards together with the parish registers and other sources from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County, Quality Bakery, Stabo Scandinavian Imports and Lena’s Lefse will host a Syttende Mai Polsefest from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17 at the Hjemkomst Center in honor of Norway’s Constitution Day.
