Another
Way to Rip Us Off!
One day last week, Scam Squad received a
call from two women who wanted to confirm
something that was received in an e-mail.
The e-mail was sent to one of the women from
someone who said, something like this:
Are you interested in earning money while
you drive your car around? It’s very
simple. Respond to this e-mail and you
will receive $1000 to be deposited into your
bank account and a decal to display on your
car.
So,
the gimmick is to deposit the check and take
$500 dollars as the initial commission
payment. The remaining money was to
pay for the decal that would be sent to her.
Once, the decal was in place, they would pay
her commission for advertising their
product.
The Scam Squad SAV who took the call asked
what company would she be advertising for?
This sounded fishy and too good to be true.
The woman said she was told it would be for
Samsung. On hearing this, it confirmed
the SAVs initial concern. Why would a
large company, as large and well-known
throughout the world, pay to have a decal of
their company placed on cars for the purpose
of advertising?
This is what could have happened should the
woman had gone along with the offer.
She would have deposited the money in her
bank account as instructed and would have
taken out the $500. Then she would
have followed through with sending the money
to pay for the decal. Then the bank
would have notified her a week or so later,
that the check was not good. The money
she took out for herself came out of her own
funds, and she paid for the decal also from
her own funds. It was
lucky the women called to verify.
That’s what we do. We
research and stay up on the latest scams so
that we can help people identify scams and
prevent them from falling victim to the many
scams going around.
